Fedora 8 Compiz Fusion & Emerald Themes Installation
Fedora 8 apparently is missing the fusion-icon package along with some others. If you are having problems with Compiz Fusion and Emerald Themes not working, then you must remove Compiz Fusion and configuration files and re-install it using the Compiz Fusion repository. Follow the following steps to do that:
(Important: Read agreement at bottom of document before continuing)

  1. Click on Applications-System Tools-Terminal to open a terminal and then switch to root user.

    [jesse@lintush ~]$ su -
    [root@lintush ~]#

  2. Lets remove all Compiz Fusion packages because the packages we are going to install are newer (as of the writing of this guide) versions than Fedora's.

[root@lintush ~]# yum list | grep installed | grep compiz | xargs yum -y remove

If you have 'emerald emerald-themes' installed, remove them as well. The Compiz Fusion repository has newer versions.
    [root@lintush ~]# yum remove emerald emerald-themes

If you have Compiz Fusion's plugin and configuration tool 'ccsm' installed also remove it. There is a newer version as well.

    [root@lintush ~]# yum remove ccsm

  3. Now lets remove all Compiz Fusion configuration files created by the previous installation in users home directories. This is just to make sure that the new version of Compiz Fusion creates new configuration files rather than use the old ones. ( Note: If you have any files or directories that match the names 'compiz' or 'fusion' this files or directories will be deleted.)

    [root@lintush ~]# cd /home
[root@lintush home]# find | grep compiz | xargs rm -rf
[root@lintush home]# find | grep fusion | xargs rm -rf

  4. Switch to the repository directory.
    [root@lintush home]# cd /etc/yum.repos.d

  5. Install Compiz Fusion RPM to add repository.

    [root@lintush yum.repos.d]# rpm -ihv http://www.dfm.uninsubria.it/compiz/compiz-fusion-release-1-1.noarch.rpm

  6. Now lets install all Compiz Fusion packages and other required packages.

    [root@lintush yum.repos.d]# yum install compiz-all fusion-icon-all compiz-bcop compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported compizconfig-backend-gconf compizconfig-backend-kconfig emerald emerald-themes fusion-icon

  7. Once finished. Exit the root console completely.

    [root@lintush yum.repos.d]# exit
    [jesse@lintush ~]$ exit

  8. Now add a session for Compiz Fusion. Click on System-Preferences-Personal-Sessions to get the startup programs window.

  9. Click on the button +Add to add a Compiz Fusion session and type in what's in the fields below (you don't really need the comment) then click on OK.

  10. Now logout and log back in and you should now see the fusion icon appear on upper right corner of the screen.

  11. The final thing to do is to set Emerald Themes as your theme manager. Right-click on Fusion icon go down to Select Windows Decorator and click on Emerald. That's it.

    Hello Fedora Linux users,

I installed Fedora 8 yesterday and I am very pleased with it. I had some problems with Compiz Fusion missing the fusion icon package which controls Compiz settings and Emerald Themes settings. After getting it to work, I was so happy that I decided to write this guide. I hope this guide helps someone out with their Compiz Fusion and Emerald Themes problem. Have fun!

    Hi,

You have to create a soft link to the fusion icon in your home folder under the .kde/Autostart. Look at example below:

    ln -s /usr/bin/fusion-icon ~/.kde/Autostart/fusion-icon

It should start automatically next time you start KDE. I think this is where it goes. Give it a try.
